A Short Conversation With Liz Andrade of CMD+Shift Design

Check out this interview I did with MartyRomero of They Call Me Marty, this site has some great interviews on it and I’m happy to be a part of it! :)

I am interested in growing their business—some clients get really excited about this and we form a strong client/designer bond… some people just want someone who can work cheap and fast and get something out the door for them. That’s just NOT me.  – Liz Andrade, Interview at They Call Me Marty

A New Home

I have already wasted so much of my time dealing with this, that I don’t even want to write a full post about it – but, If you follow me on Twitter or are friends with me on Facebook – you have surely seen me talking about my problems with Network Solution hosting and I have the full long story posted on my Facebook wall if you do want all the ridiculous details.

After a very stressful weekend, I finally had enough and am now very happy to have CMD+Shift Design at a new hosting home! :)

I feel good – like it’s a fresh new start!

My Dribbbles this Week

Well, you’re supposed to share screen shots – but a few of the shots I made this week were from photos taken of some recent print work. So far, dribbbles been fun, but it really is more of a way to share stuff for inspiration more than to get critique, it seems.

If you’re looking for some guidance on designs in progress, check out ConceptFeedback.com!

…and in case you were wondering – nope. I don’t have any Dribbble invites yet.

Web Hosting Woes: A Letter to my Readers and Network Solutions

I have had bad issues with Network Solutions over the past 6 months dealing with security and their ability (or willingness) to take whatever steps nessecary to insure security. I have never said a bad word of them in public, I’ve given them second and third and fourth chances.

Yesterday my static portfolio website got compromised AGAIN, and I am finally speaking up in the HOPES that maybe my someone at Network Solutions will listen up and step up their game on making sure this site can stay secure for me and my clients and for all of you!

I’d love if any of you want to send them a Twitter message and let them know we are counting on them to help this site stay safe! (@netsolcares) by sure to mention me, @cmdshiftdesign in your message!

Yesterday I contacted them via Twitter and got some good talk from the customer service rep. I asked that a server support agent CALL ME within a day and they agreed to arrange that.

When my site was flagged by Google this morning, I DM’d @netsolcares again about it and within a couple hours someone called me. Great! Except, this was not a server specialist, this was another customer service rep. (No hate to you Customer Service people, I’ve been you before – you guys deserve love when you do your job well!) I was frustrated that I couldnt talk to someone who could really discuss the issue with me.

The rep told me she was going to put in a request for their technicians to scan my site for malicious code, I told “I have done this already myself – and removed the injected problem. What I would like you to request please is for your technicians to examine the server my files are on to make sure it is up to date with all security patches, and to let me know why this breach happened and what they have done specifically to assure it will not happen again.” She agreed to this and we hung up. It’s now 10:30 at night, Google has finally rescanned my site and the blockade has been lifted! But… I guess we’ll see tomorrow when I hear from Network Solutions.

<3 you guys! Thank you for all the Tweets of concern and support today about the site being down – I do appologize and I am doing all I can to make sure this won’t happen again!

What makes a good Ebook?

Hello everyone! I started this wild idea that got into my head near the end of 2009 — to take the last 2+ years of blog posts that I have written about the lessons I’ve learned on my freelance journey and compile, edit and expand on them to create a comprehensive ebook that can help any new freelancers make the leap, or get some conversations started between seasoned independents.

So far I have only had a few hours to dedicate to the project, started out by corralling all my freelance related posts and am now working on going over the content from each and trying to see how I can organize it all into something that works in a book format. This is already proving to be a BIG project, and a little overwhelming, but I really want to do it! I’m reaching out to all of you to maybe give me some direction. Is there any content you feel like I haven’t touched on in the blog yet that I should cover? Do you think this is a ridiculous idea? Any title ideas? :)

I love you all and am excited to hear any ideas you want to throw out at me! Leave a comment, @cmdshiftdesign me on Twitter or email me, (info at cmdshiftdesign dot com!)

Clients from Heaven vs Clients from Hell

This week I got the chance to do a quick video chat interview with Niki Brown from the DesignOBlog. We talked about nightmare clients and having a GOOD client experience. Head over to her blog and check out what was said!

Back to Work and Looking Ahead

Happy New Year everyone! The last weeks been a big mess, so I just thought I’d check in and let you all know what’s happening.  After the last month of endless holiday and end of year obligations, I returned home last week with a little more than a few gifts, I had a nasty cold that knocked me on my butt for the whole week and the homepage of my portfolio site had been interjected with some malicious code and blacklisted by Google.

*SIGH*

Well, I was able to get my site back on Googles good side. I found and eliminated the code — which luckily was only on ONE page of my portfolio site and hadn’t effected any of the WordPress blog. Since none of the other sites hosted on my server were effected, I believe the attack was most likely allowed through by a weakness in a certain 3rd party statistics service I have been using. I’ve quit using the suspected service and am keeping a close eye on things around here. Changed my account passwords, etc, etc. For all the stress and headache of having my site offline was, once I logged into Googles Webmaster’s Tools and alerted them that the issue had been resolved, it only took about 6 hours for my site to be out of quarantine. (Not too bad.)

New Office Chair! After all this, today I am back to work. I have a new office chair which is proving to be very comfortable! (I wish I had invested in this a long time ago!) Later this week I’ll start back up on more regular posting… maybe even a video (since I got a new snazzy camera now too!)

10 Ugliest Websites of the Decade

Most web designers wouldn’t be so stoked to have something they made featured in a post with a title like “10 Ugliest Websites of the Decade” — but I am not most people.

This site was made earlier this year for a contest hosted by Niki Brown at DesignOBlog, I came in 5th place on her site and this week — that same site was chosen by ABC News as one of the UGLIEST sites of the DECADE! :)

The site is in honor of my (now deceased) kitteh, Cthulhu. This is a fitting tribute to this furry little man who I miss dearly!

Here’s to you Cthulhu! :)
